A number of religious orders served the inhabitants of
the Fortress Louisbourg during its short occupation. A
small number of Catholic nuns from the Congregation
of Notre Dame were responsible for educating the
female children of the town. The CND continued to
shape women’s education in Cape Breton into the late
twentieth century.
